Perspex Sheets – How Are They Made?

Perspex is one of the most trusted brands of acrylic sheets. It is known for its clean finish, versatile use, and considerable durability not found on lesser brands. Also, it is known for its cast Perspex acrylic sheet which is made to be stronger than conventional extruded acrylic. Because of its unique properties and characteristics, it is a popular choice for structures including residences, buildings, and airplane windshields.

Two Types of Perspex Acrylic

Before discussing how a Perspex sheet is made, it is important to know that there are two types of it. This is because these two types are made differently. The first one is the regular extruded Perspex which is considered the lesser of the two. However, extruded acrylics are already considerably strong enough and are perfect for a wide range of industrial use.

The second one is the pride of Perspex brand – the Cast Perspex. This one is made with a different process and is stronger and more flexible thanks to its high molecule density. This gives it more uses where a higher level of durability is required.

How Is Extruded Acrylic Made

An acrylic sheet including Perspex sheets is made by having a catalyst react with a monomer. This reaction creates a polymer which becomes the main component of the resulting acrylic sheet. To attain the desired shape and thickness, both the monomer and catalyst are poured into a shaped cast where it is allowed to cool and dry. Using the batch cell method, sheets of varying thickness and width can be produced.

How Is Cast Perspex Made?

The general procedures are the same. However, Cast Perspex is molded between two sheets of glass. This creates better finish overall. Also, the method is designed to produce high molecular mass which results in a stronger and more durable finish. Additionally, Cast Perspex is more flexible and more resilient to breaking.

Variety Of Design

To match different designs and durability requirements, several types of acrylic sheets have been made available.
